The result has only intensified pressure on Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese has struggled to steady the ship since his arrival in November.

Questions are mounting over the club’s direction both on and off the pitch.

With emotions still raw from a bitterly disappointing campaign, the changes behind the scenes continue.

This time, in the club’s Academy setup, which has now lost one of its key figures.

Manchester United coach David Hughes appointed as Newport County manager

David Hughes, who played a vital role in United’s youth system as Under-21s coach and assistant manager, has officially been appointed as Newport County’s new manager, as per confirmation on their club website.

The League Two side have confirmed that Hughes has signed a two-year deal as he begins his first senior management role.

Links of Hughes joining the club began earlier this month – that speculation can now be put to bed.

The 47-year-old is well respected within coaching circles, having previously held senior Academy roles at Cardiff City and Southampton.

As well as managing the Wales Under-17 national team for four years.

Known for his developmental focus and tactical acumen, Hughes played a major part in shaping United’s next generation during a turbulent time for the club.

Hughes will be joined in Newport by Wayne Hatswell, who returns to Rodney Parade as assistant manager, and Lee Kendall, who has been named head of goalkeeping.

Speaking after his appointment, Hughes said: “Leaving a great club like Manchester United is never easy, but I’m excited about what lies ahead here.

“You build relationships with people and that makes decisions like this challenging.

“But after speaking to the chairman on a few occasions, it became a straightforward decision in terms of the challenge ahead and the shared vision for the club.”

Hatswell, a familiar face at Newport, previously served as assistant and interim manager during two spells between 2013 and 2022, guiding the team to multiple League Two play-off finals and strong cup campaigns.

He most recently managed the Wales U17s.

Kendall, the son of former Newport goalkeeper Mark Kendall, arrives with extensive experience as a goalkeeping coach.

He’s held senior roles with England Women, Cardiff City, Sheffield United, and Bath City, where he also briefly acted as interim manager.

With Hughes and his new staff now in place, Newport County will look to push forward.

Manchester United, meanwhile, face yet another transition in what has already been a season full of them.
