Manchester United’s nightmare season has only grown darker after this week’s Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

A result that not only denied the club a trophy but confirmed there’ll be no European football at Old Trafford next season.

Pressure is mounting on Ruben Amorim, who’s endured a tough start since arriving in November.

The financial reality of United’s situation is becoming clearer by the day.

A massive squad overhaul is expected this summer, and with the club needing to generate funds, rivals are beginning to circle.

One of the first concrete moves has now arrived – and it targets Bruno Fernandes yet again.

Al-Hilal ramp up efforts to sign Bruno Fernandes with £300m package

According to Chris Wheeler’s report for Daily Mail, Al Hilal have submitted an £300m package for Bruno Fernandes, hoping to capitalise on United’s precarious situation.

The Saudi giants are ready to hand Fernandes a £200m package, including a basic £700,000-a-week wage over three years.

With £100m going to Manchester United, as the transfer fee.

As well as bonuses and a signing-on fee that could see him earn £65m per season.

£65m over three years would see Fernandes earn near £200m.

Al-Hilal have now set a deadline for next week, demanding a final answer before the end of May.

The club want their marquee signing in place ahead of the Club World Cup, and are prepared to switch targets if Fernandes doesn’t accept within 72 hours of their final proposal.

United sources as per Daily Mail’s report, have reiterated that they do not want to lose their captain and best player.

But the club’s financial reality is brutal: defeat in the Europa League final cost United £100m in Champions League revenue.

While they must also pay £10m to Adidas and are on course to lose millions more due to their low Premier League finish.

Fernandes, 30, is happy at the club – but his comments after Wednesday’s final raised eyebrows.

“I’ve always said I will be here until the club says to me that it’s time to go,” he said.

“If the club thinks it’s time to part ways because they want to do some cash in or whatever, it’s what it is.

“Football sometimes is like this.”

Although he remains a key figure in Amorim’s plans, Fernandes may be tempted by the huge deal.

Especially with no European football and a 25 per cent wage cut expected next season.

There’s also belief that Fernandes could still keep his place in the Portugal national team, following the precedent set by Cristiano Ronaldo after his 2022 move to Al Nassr.

The situation reflects the scale of the rebuild facing Amorim this summer.

Almost every player is considered available at the right price as INEOS and Amorim begin reshaping a broken squad.

The coming days will be decisive – and United now risk losing their most important player in one of the most high-stakes transfer sagas of the summer.
