In 1987, as the Minnesota Timberwolves were preparing for their inaugural season, Mark Thompson, a budding graphic designer from Austin, Minnesota, read about a competition this new team was having to select their first logo. Mark sent in three design options. The team received a total of about 2,500 submissions but selected one of Mark’s designs. That logo became the Timberwolves’ logo for their inaugural 1989-90 season. The logo is still used on merchandise and by the franchise and has been cemented into sports history.
