Manchester United are set to sanction a number of player exits in the summer
Manchester United are facing a decisive summer transfer window as they look to put a miserable 2024-25 season well and truly behind them.
The club have benefitted from the decision to loan the likes of Antony and Marcus Rashford in January, with both players enjoying improved form since joining Real Betis and Aston Villa, respectively. It means the club has a much better chance of getting a decent fee for either player in the summer.
Barcelona declare interest in Marcus Rashford
Barcelona sporting director Deco has outlined his club’s interest in Rashford. He said: “We like Luis Diaz, we like Rashford… and we like other wingers too' We can't talk about players under contract with other clubs.”
Liverpool star Diaz reportedly has a £67m price tag on his head with the Anfield club happy to let him move to Spain if their demands are met. However, Rashford may prove more attractive for Barca, as he is available for £40m in the summer.
Aston Villa have an option to buy for that amount, signalling to other clubs how much it will take to sign Rashford. The United academy graduate does not have a long-term future at Old Trafford and is not part of Ruben Amorim’s plans despite his improved form since making the move to Villa Park.
It is unclear if Villa will trigger their option to buy the forward as they aim to book a spot in the Champions League on the final day of the Premier League season.
Where did it all go wrong for Marcus Rashford at Manchester United?
Speaking earlier this season, sacked United boss Erik ten Hag said of Rashford: “He has to set his life right, his training attitude right, his match attitude right. When he sets his professionalism he will perform because he is a class player.”
After being dropped for the Manchester derby back in December, Rashford publicly declared his hope of finding a new challenge in his career. After interest from the likes of Barca and Borussia Dortmund in the January window, he signed for Villa close to deadline day.
Since joining Villa, he has played 17 games - scoring four goals and providing six assists. He has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury as Emery’s side look to secure their place back in the Champions League next season. A £40m sale of Rashford would significantly bolster United’s position in regards to profit and sustainability as his departure would be accounted as ‘pure profit’ given his status as an academy player.
