It’s a common mistake. But it’s a major one.
So once again, this time as it relates to the New York Giants, we’re here to clear it up.
New York signed its top pick, edge rusher Abdul Carter, to a fully guaranteed deal worth $45 million.
In order to make room, the Giants cleared $10 million in cap space with a restructure of star edge rusher Brian Burns.
And as a result? The “casuals” are erroneously under the assumption that Burns “did the Giants a favor.” …
And it’s nonsense.
All that happened here is that the team converted base salary into a signing bonus. Burns didn’t even do anything.
The team didn’t need to ask him or negotiate with him. No sacrifice was made. His income is exactly the same.
The Giants’ restructure here is what we call “flipping the switch.” … as they simply and figuratively moved a lump of money from Burns’ left pocket to his right pocket.
All of this was pre-planned, right from the time the Giants knew they owned the No. 3 overall pick and the slotted salary that comes with it.
So for Burns, it’s important to note that the restructuring of his deal isn’t a pay cut … and now we move on with two standouts in Brian Burns and Abdul Carter in line to start for New York along the edge, teaming up with Dexter Lawrence and the fellas in helping to make one of the league’s best pass rushes that much better.
