For the 2024/25 season to be considered a disappointing one for Erling Haaland is a testament to the level that he usually plays at. Honours-wise, it has been far from the norm for Haaland and Manchester City, who have ended a season trophyless for the first time since the 2016/17 campaign.
Many have said that Haaland has had a poor outing this season, but the Norwegian has netted 30 goals in 43 games. Haaland remains one of the best strikers in Europe and perhaps the best out-and-out finisher in the entire continent.

After beginning his career in his native Norway, Haaland joined Red Bull Salzburg in 2019 and from there, the world started to take notice of the player. After just six months in Austria, Haaland signed for Borussia Dortmund in 2020 where, across two-and-a-half years, he matured as a striker.
2025 marks Haaland’s third year at Manchester City. During his first campaign in England, Haaland netted 36 goals to break the Premier League record for goals scored by one player within a season. His form was critical in Manchester City’s European treble win, when they became just the second English team to accomplish such a feat.
Haaland has been playing at the highest level of European football for five years now. As such, it can be easy to forget that the striker is just 24 years old, so long has he been a superstar in football. Back in 2020, Haaland answered a number of questions for ESPN. In doing so, he revealed which player from years past he would have loved to share a pitch with if he’d had the chance.

Midfielder had a stellar career
When asked which retired player he would play alongside if able, Haaland simply said the name “Frank Lampard.” Now a manager who guided Coventry City to a Championship play-off place in his tenure at the club thus far, Lampard enjoyed a playing career that spanned over two decades, debuting for West Ham United in 1995.
After six years with the Hammers, who Lampard appeared for as a youth player, the midfielder moved to Chelsea, where he would spend the prime years of his career. Across 13 years, Lampard helped the Blues win three Premier League titles, alongside six domestic cups, a Europa League and Chelsea’s first-ever Champions League trophy.
In 611 Premier League matches, Lampard notched 293 goal contributions. His 177 goals are the most of any midfielder in Premier League history and Lampard is unquestionably one of the best players in the history of the English top flight.
Particularly at Chelsea, Lampard was a major threat to opposing defenders, capable of creating chances through either a strike of his own or finding a pinpoint pass to a teammate. Playing with the likes of Nicolas Anelka, Didier Drogba and more, Lampard was consistently surrounded by quality at Stamford Bridge.
It is terrifying to imagine the combination play of Haaland and Lampard as players in the same team. It is certainly beneficial, however, to any team that would have come up against the pair.
