Bruno Fernandes gets 72 hours ultimatum

Bruno Fernandes has been at the heart of Manchester United’s identity since arriving in 2020.

Through countless changes in management and turbulent seasons, the 30-year-old has remained the side’s most consistent performer and passionate leader.

However, as United reel from their worst campaign in decades – capped off by a crushing Europa League final defeat to Tottenham – even Fernandes’ future is now uncertain.

Al Hilal’s long-standing interest in Fernandes has intensified as the club looks to pounce on United’s vulnerable financial position.

After missing out on Champions League qualification – and the £100m revenue that comes with it – the Red Devils are under pressure to raise funds quickly to back Ruben Amorim’s rebuild.

And Fernandes has emerged as their most high-profile, and valuable, asset.

According to Chris Wheeler’s report for the Daily Mail, Al Hilal have now given Fernandes a 72-hour ultimatum to decide whether he wants to accept their offer and make the switch to the Saudi Pro League.

The proposal on the table is staggering: a £100m transfer fee to United and a three-year deal worth up to £200m for the midfielder.

That includes a basic salary of £700,000-a-week, rising to £65m-a-season with bonuses and a signing-on fee.

Al Hilal want an answer by the end of May as they aim to lock in a marquee signing before the Club World Cup.

Sources close to the situation, as per Daily Mail’s report, insist United don’t want to sell, and that Amorim is desperate to keep his captain.

But with Fernandes facing a 25 per cent wage cut next season and no European football, the club may be forced into a reluctant sale.

After the final, Fernandes admitted he was open to leaving if the club decided it was time, saying:

“If the club thinks it’s time to part ways because they want to do some cash in or whatever, it’s what it is. Football sometimes is like this.”

The next few days will now prove pivotal.

United must weigh up ambition versus financial reality, while Fernandes faces the biggest decision of his career.
