Paul Merson drops Man Utd vs Aston Villa prediction as pundit claims Ruben Amorim made ‘indirect’ six-word admission

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has dropped his two cents on Ruben Amorim and the current state of Manchester United amid his prediction for the Aston Villa match.

Manchester United will end the 2024-25 season with their worst finish in the table in the Premier League era, irrespective of the outcome against Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Red Devils languish in 16th place in the table and United are currently one point behind 15th-place West Ham and one point ahead of 17th-place Tottenham.

United have lost a shocking 18 times in the Premier League alone this season and the Red Devils have won only 10 times in 37 league matches amid their poor form.

Ruben Amorim’s men have lost four of their last five Premier League matches and the United boss has been unable to turn around the Red Devils’ awful league form.

United will finish their season outside of the top half of the table and the Red Devils will be without European football at Old Trafford for the 2025-26 campaign.

Amorim’s side were last in Premier League action last Friday and United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2025 Europa League final.

Paul Merson makes his assessment of Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd message after the 2025 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham

Manchester United met Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday evening and the Red Devils suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spurs at Bilbao.

The outcome of the Europa League final between United and Tottenham has meant that Ruben Amorim’s side fell short of securing a place in the Champions League.

Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout as United manager, admitted that he would be ready to walk from the club if he were asked to do so.

Speaking in his column for Sportskeeda, Paul Merson suggested that ex-Sporting CP boss Amorim was “indirect” in saying that he wanted to be put ‘out of this misery.’

“Manchester United are where they are for a reason,” he said.

“They are not a very good team! You know what? Even if Manchester United had time till now to score and win the Europa League final, they still wouldn’t have done it! It was that bad.

“Ruben Amorim came out and said that he is ready to step down if the club wants to part ways with him. That’s just an indirect way of him saying, ‘put me out of this misery.’

“If you walk away, it makes you look weak. But saying that instead is like telling everyone you’re prepared to give up.

“Amorim knew this would happen, he knew that this group had no chance, they have been a million miles off it this season.”

What is Paul Merson’s Premier League prediction for Man Utd vs Aston Villa at Old Trafford?

United will host sixth-place Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday at 4pm UK time and Merson praised Unai Emery’s men for their “outstanding” season so far.

“I don’t think Manchester United would even want to play this game now,” Merson continued.

“Aston Villa have been outstanding this season. They reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League and I think they will finish inside the top five.

“When the fixtures came out, they had a very tricky run of games in these final few weeks. But they have negotiated it well so far and I expect that to continue.”

Sky Sports pundit Merson has predicted that United will drop points at Old Trafford again and backed Aston Villa to pick up a 2-0 Premier League win on the weekend.
