The 49ers may already be gutted with their decision to name Kevin Thelwell as Sporting Director at Rangers.

The US consortium brought in the ex-Everton man to help oversee many matters in Govan as a takeover attempt continues to rumble on.

This will see the 51-year-old take part in discussions over a new head coach, after Barry Ferguson’s departure, as well as the upcoming transfer window.

With that being said, the 49ers may live to regret bringing Thelwell in after a fresh announcement emerged at Arsenal ahead of the summer.

Rangers regret to emerge after Arsenal development

It is fair to say that after departing Everton ahead of the summer, Thelwell has a huge amount of work to do in G51 moving forward.

MORE RANGERS STORIES

There is no doubt that he has had to work in the toughest of circumstances with the financial problems that the Toffees have been forced to deal with.

With that being said, his credentials may not prove to be enough to make him the desired man for the 49ers ahead of their potential ownership.

Preston North End Director of Youth

Kevin Thelwell career path

This comes after one-time target Jason Ayto has now become available after his departure from Arsenal was confirmed by The Athletic on 23 May.

This comes after the Englishman was named as sporting director in North London after Edu resigned to take up a role at Olympiakos.

Rangers may now live to regret not holding out to bring in the 40-year-old after showing an interest in his signature earlier in the year.

TBR Football reported the interest on 31 March and suggested that the Gunners didn’t want to lose Ayto, but clearly have opted to go in a fresh direction.

Ayto miss must be forgotten at Rangers

At this stage, there is little that the Light Blues can do to rectify a move for the ex-Arsenal man after their prior interest.

Thelwell is now firmly in his role and already has enough on his plate without questions of his credentials surrounding Ayto’s availability.

This will see the former Everton man look to find the right manager option for the Ibrox club as Davide Ancelotti and Steven Gerrard continue to be monitored.

It will be interesting to see how much patience the current director is awarded before a move for Ayto is made by the 49ers in G51.
