Arsenal prefer to sell 25yo winger this summer

Arsenal would prefer to sell Reiss Nelson this summer, though he’ll be given the option to explore various opportunities, according to a report.

James McNicholas reports for The Athletic that Reiss Nelson will be permitted to explore opportunities to leave Arsenal this summer, but the club would prefer a permanent deal if possible.

In addition to getting both player and club a clean break, Nelson’s sale would be ‘pure profit’ in Financial Fair Play terms, boosting Arsenal’s transfer budget this summer.

That’s because Nelson is an academy player, and he didn’t cost anything for the Gunners to bring in. There’s no transfer fee amortising on the balance sheet.

Nelson hasn’t featured for Fulham since early December, having suffered back-to-back hamstring injuries that ended with him needing surgery earlier this year.

Fulham have one more game remaining this season, but Nelson is unlikely to make it back in time, so his campaign is effectively already over.

Before his injury, Nelson made 12 appearances for Fulham on loan, scoring twice and assisting one goal. He’d earned himself a run in the team immediately prior to his injury, but any momentum he’d built up is now gone.

Nelson has already returned to London Colney to work on his injury, and it seems possible he’ll be involved with Mikel Arteta’s squad for pre-season. After that, it’s likely he’s on the way out.
