NL powerhouses highlight Friday Night Baseball doubleheader on Apple TV+

“Friday Night Baseball” on Apple TV+ is back this week and features a pair of potential playoff previews.

Unlike October 2024, this one won't decide who goes to the World Series. But the NLCS rematch will offer additional bragging rights for one of MLB's best teams. The Mets have surrendered fewer runs than any team in baseball, while only the Cubs have scored more runs than the Dodgers. Friday's matchup on the mound gives us a likely future Hall of Fame left-hander against a right-hander having a breakthrough season as Clayton Kershaw (0-0, 11.25 ERA) meets 29-year-old Griffin Canning (5-1, 2.47). Canning will have his hands full with a Dodgers lineup that includes six batters with at least eight home runs, including Shohei Ohtani (17), Teoscar Hernández (10) and Freddie Freeman (9), who leads the NL in batting average (.368) and slugging percentage (.660).

Two more postseason hopefuls square off in the second game of the Apple TV+ twin bill. The Cardinals won 12 of 13 games between May 4-17 to vault into second place in the NL Central behind the Cubs, while Arizona is one of four teams over .500 in the NL West. St. Louis showed its versatility during that stretch, scoring 10 runs in three of those games while winning five one-run decisions. The Cardinals don't flash a ton of power, but their lineup has depth -- they have 10 players between 16 and 28 RBIs, and second baseman Brendan Donovan leads the NL in hits (61) and is tied for the lead with 16 doubles. Facing that lineup on Friday is Arizona right-hander Zac Gallen (3-5, 5.14 ERA), who has had two rough starts following three gems in which he allowed five runs over 18 innings with 20 strikeouts. Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez and outfielder Corbin Carroll have combined for 29 homers and 72 RBIs, and both have played all 50 games. Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas (3-2, 3.77 ERA) will try to contain them on Friday.

With MLB and Apple continuing their partnership in 2025, Apple TV+ will once again be bringing baseball fans a weekly Friday night doubleheader. “Friday Night Baseball,” which includes live pre- and postgame shows, will stream exclusively on Apple TV+ and be free from local broadcast restrictions.
