Los Angeles Rams Named Best Trade Fit for $72 Million Cornerback

The Los Angeles Rams have emerged as the top trade fit for Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey, a move that could reshape both teams’ rosters. With three years remaining on his $72 million contract, the NFL star’s future in Miami appears uncertain as the team evaluates its long-term plans amidst salary cap concerns.

Ramsey, despite a slight decline in recent years, remains one of the NFL’s most recognizable defensive backs. Over the last two seasons, he recorded impressive marks, including a 71.8 passer rating allowed and 6.6 yards per target. A return to LA, where he previously thrived, would provide Los Angeles with a much-needed boost in their secondary while reuniting the player with a familiar system.

The proposed trade would send the cornerback back to Los Angeles in exchange for cornerback Cobie Durant and two future draft picks, including a third-round and a fourth-round selection in 2026. This deal would allow the Dolphins to alleviate Ramsey’s escalating cap hits, projected to reach $36.2 million by 2027, while acquiring assets to build for the future. For LA, his experience and ball-hawking ability could elevate a defense that has struggled to maintain its identity.

Miami’s decision to explore trade options stems from the highly competitive AFC landscape and the need to balance its roster financially. Although the cornerback continues to perform at a high level, the Dolphins must weigh the benefits of retaining him against the opportunity to invest in younger talent. This potential trade aligns with their strategy to remain competitive while planning for long-term success.

As it stands, Ramsey may get to do more in Los Angeles than in Miami. This is detailed more in an analysis by Matt Bowen for ESPN.

Miami general manager Chris Grier said the team is looking at offers for Ramsey, who is no longer a blue-chip defender at age 30. The Rams could use his skill set, as his jolt of speed and ball production would upgrade their secondary. They’d also have to give up a lot less this time around to acquire him.

Ramsey can still pattern match vertically downfield, and he still has high-end backfield vision in zone coverage. He would also give Los Angeles more flexibility in sub packages because he can create disruptive plays as a nickel corner. He had 2 interceptions, 8 pass breakups and 6 tackles for loss in Miami last season.

Los Angeles, facing their own challenges after recent roster adjustments, could benefit greatly from the cornerback’s leadership and playmaking skills. His return would signal a commitment to strengthening their defense and competing in the NFC West.

If finalized, this blockbuster deal could redefine both teams’ trajectories, offering the Rams defensive stability and the Dolphins valuable flexibility. The move highlights the delicate balance of managing talent and financial resources in today’s NFL.
