Man United lost the Europa League final meaning that they won’t have European football next season.

Following the defeat, Amorim’s future has been plunged into uncertainty, and the Red Devils are now staring down their worst season in recent history. Furthermore, the fact that they aren’t in the Champions League could make recruitment that bit harder in the summer.

It means that the Red Devils will likely have to sell before they buy this summer, especially considering their precarious position regarding Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Scholes’ fears about Mainoo and Garnacho could come true

Two players that have been linked with moves away from Old Trafford are Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho. Chelsea have reportedly shown interest in both, whereas Napoli are reportedly very keen on Garnacho too.

Seeing as both players are academy graduates, any sale of them would help to generate ‘pure profit’ with regards to PSR. As United won’t have the money from the Champions League, there is a risk that they could be forced to sell the pair.

He said: “It doesn't look like Ruben Amorim will get a war chest to go to war with. It doesn't feel like that. I get the impression, and I could be wrong, but I think they might sell the two young players. I think they might sell Mainoo and Garnacho.”

“Maybe they sell them this summer. The Mainoo one would hurt. They both would. Garnacho came later but Mainoo has been at the club since he was a kid.

“He had a brilliant season last year and it makes the academy system look bad if a player like him can't make it and they have to sell him. I hope I'm wrong, I hope they don't do that, but the noises I hear, it is a big concern."

How much could Mainoo and Garnacho generate for Amorim to spend?

The issue that United have is that they need money to spend this summer, as Amorim will need to orchestrate a squad rebuild if they are to return to former glory. The only way they can do that is by selling some of their more valuable players.

That would generate £137m for United. Let’s assume that they are signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m - that would leave Amorim with £74.5m to spend on rebuilding the rest of his squad should they sell Mainoo and Garnacho.

Add on the likely sales of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony, and Amorim would have a healthy budget should United sell the two academy graduates. But if Scholes’s fears prove right, it could become more of a loss than a gain if they do.
