Report: Southampton in line for a near £30m cash injection at the cost of losing key star to Leeds United

Southampton could now take home nearly £30m, with Leeds United eyeing a move for one of their players.

The Saints have had a tough 2024/25 season, which has included relegation down to the Championship and just about avoiding Derby County’s record-low points tally.

Southampton are currently searching for a new permanent manager, though Will Still is expected to be announced in the very near future.

His appointment is likely to be confirmed after their final game of the season, which he will be in attendance for.

Still will then have to set about rebuilding Southampton, but may have to do it without one man.

Leeds United ready to pay up for Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes

Mateus Fernandes joined the south coast outfit in the summer of 2024 from Sporting for a fee of around £12m.

Despite Southampton having a poor 2024/25, though, the club are looking for much more than that figure to sell the player.

Fernandes is under contract at St Mary’s until 2029, but could be on his way to recently promoted Leeds United this summer.

Alan Nixon has reported via his Patreon that, after Fernandes was linked to Crystal Palace, Leeds United are prepared to get close to the Saints’ valuation of the 20-year-old, which is £30m.

Daniel Farke has made Fernandes his number one priority and the Whites want a deal done quickly.

How Southampton could spend Mateus Fernandes money

After a very disappointing campaign, a lot of work needs to be done on this squad, and the Fernandes sale could go some way toward a rebuild.

Southampton are looking at Lawrence Shankland, but have competition on that front from Ipswich Town.

Elsewhere, Richard Kone has been of interest after an impressive stint at Wycombe Wanderers.

Wycombe will remain in League One after losing out in the play-offs this season, potentially handing Southampton a Kone boost.

Elsewhere, West Ham winger Luis Guilherme is liked by the Saints, who the Hammers want near £20m for.
