Liverpool are making progress towards a £125million deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz in what is seen as a “huge coup” for Arne Slot’s side.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about the deal.
The Reds held a meeting with the Germany midfielder and his family in an effort to convince them to swap Leverkusen for Merseyside this summer and Liverpool have made a formal approach to the Germany side about what would be a club-record signing.
That is despite interest from Bayern Munich, who had been the favourites for his signature and were widely expected to be his destination when the window opens.
However, Liverpool believe they can convince the 22-year-old to make the move and have upped the ante by making contact with Leverkusen to get a deal over the line.
This comes after Football Insider revealed Man City have given up on signing Wirtz as he is set to join another club with the Reds firmly in the race.

Liverpool pushing to agree Florian Wirtz deal
Football Insider revealed last month that Bayern were the favourites to sign Wirtz ahead of Man City and it would be difficult to beat them to a deal.
Bayer Leverkusen will demand over £100million up front for their star man, causing concerns about whether a deal can be done, but Liverpool are working hard to that end.
O’Rourke explained that Slot’s side are making an ambitious move for the midfielder and believe they can beat Bayern to the deal.
“*They are aiming to beat Bayern Munich to the signing of Florian Wirtz,*” he told Football Insider.
“It’s a hugely ambitious move by Liverpool, many people had expected the Germany international to make that move to Bayern Munich.
“But Liverpool have held a meeting with the player’s family to try and persuade them to move to England.
“You’re talking about one of the best players in Europe.
“If Liverpool could win the race for his signature, what a huge coup that would be. I can see it happening now, as things have progressed very quickly in the last few days.”

Anthony Gordon update emerges at Anfield
Wirtz is not the only big-money star on Liverpool’s radar this summer, as they have also set their sights on a potential deal to sign Anthony Gordon.
Football Insider revealed on 22 May that Liverpool have reignited their interest in Gordon and could pursue a deal which may be worth as much as £100million.
The 24-year-old came close to a move to Anfield last summer and told friends at the time that he was “very keen” on the switch.
This comes after former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle could be open to Gordon’s exit.
