Liverpool and Manchester City have been the greatest of rivals in recent years, both on and off the pitch.
Indeed, Liverpool and City have had some memorable battles on the pitch, while they’ve also had some remarkable battles in the transfer window too.
Liverpool and City have gone head-to-head over a few targets in recent years. City were interested in Virgil van Dijk before he went to Anfield, while Liverpool wanted Julian Alvarez from City at one point.
On top of that, City were interested in signing Luis Diaz last summer, while, of course, City did pinch Raheem Sterling from Liverpool.
Now, it looks like Liverpool have just got one over Man City as Florian Wirtz looks set for Liverpool.
Wirtz was strongly linked to City at one point, but now he appears Anfield bound instead.

Interestingly, Manchester City fans on social media don’t seem too fussed by this move, as many have claimed City already have a young star who will be better than Wirtz.

Manchester City fans back Claudio Echeverri after Florian Wirtz to Liverpool links
City fans online were quick to get over the idea of missing out on Florian Wirtz.
While Wirtz has been brilliant for Bayer Leverkusen in recent years, City fans believe Claudio Echeverri can be just as good in the coming years.
One fan wrote – ‘Echeverri has a higher ceiling than Wirtz. Bookmark this.’ As he made a defiant prediction.
Meanwhile, another made a bold claim, saying: ‘Echeverri will come on top vs Wirtz in future ahead. Rivals will say we are coping but trust me that’s a bold and confident take. Echeverri is the future, Echeverri is the next big thing post KDB in years to come for PL.’
Other fans were equally as bullish on Echeverri.
Of course, another benefit here is that Echeverri cost significantly less than Wirtz, as one fan noted.
‘We may have missed out on Wirtz but we have Echeverri at home. A similar level talent for a fraction of the price,’ they said.
Manchester City’s last bargain signing from Argentina embarrassed Liverpool
Liverpool are set to break their transfer record for Florian Wirtz this summer.
Liverpool’s previous record transfer was, of course, Darwin Nunez at £85m.
When Nunez arrived at Liverpool, there was a lot of comparison between the Uruguayan and Erling Haaland, but, ultimately, that debate ended up being very one-sided.
In the end, Nunez didn’t even prove to be as good as City’s second-choice striking option, Julian Alvarez.
There are a few parallels to be made here between the Nunez and Alvarez deals and the Echeverri and Wirtz deals, and, clearly, City fans believe history may repeat itself here.
City have already upstaged Liverpool with one bargain signing from Argentina in recent years, and they could be set to do it again here.
