For the better part of his career, Alex Akingbulu has been a UFL and Spring league offensive tackle out of UCLA and Fresno State. As an undrafted free agent, Akingbulu spent only a single season in the NFL.
Bouncing along he practice squad for the Washington Commanders in 2022, Akingbulu has since been a key player in the UFL recently for the Arlington Renegades.
As the popularity of the UFL continues to grow, Akingbulu is now getting more comfortable at his natural tackle position. Most recently the tackle took a moment on instagram to answer some questions about his own career.
And at the top of the list of questions to answer, the Fresno State product shared what position he would be interested in playing had he not come out as an offensive tackle.
"I'm not going to lie, I've always wanted to be a (defensive end)," Akingbulu said. "I'm not going to lie, which is wild, because I block them for a living, but I never got to play a different position.
"My whole football career, I've always been a offensive tackle forever, but the way those d-ends get after it, long, lengthy guys and just the sack celebrations and stuff like that, to be able to get sacks and honestly, you get five sacks in the league and you make a living off of that alone. So I would definitely say d-end is definitely the position I would would've loved to play for sure."
It's easy to see why a career as an edge rusher would interest Akingbulu. Tackles are always forced to play in a backpedal at times, and every mistake they make is over analyzed. If they give up a single pressure, it's seen as a bad day.
Edge rushers only need one play to have a "good game." And that is why the UFL tackle and former Commander is so intrigued with the position group on the other side of the ball.
