Manchester United legend blasts£72m star who“can’t control a ball”

Manchester United legend Gary Neville lambasts Rasmus Hojlund after his nightmare performance against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup final. The Red Devils lost the final 1-0 to Spurs in a frustrating Wednesday night where they dominated the ball possession.

United have experienced a horrible season, currently 16th in the Premier League table with 18 losses from 37 games. The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag in the middle of the season and subsequently appointed Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP.

However, Amorim’s tactical style of play caused more trouble as the team he inherited had failed to adjust this season. One thing that has remained persistent, irrespective of the tactics, is the struggle of the centre-forward options available at United.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville pinpointed Rasmus Hojlund while criticising the club’s performance against Tottenham Hotspur.

Both Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund have failed to establish themselves as a reliable number nine to lead the team. Hojlund’s invisible performance against the Spurs in the Europa League final highlighted his disastrous tenure since joining the Red Devils.

Speaking on It’s Called Soccer (via YouTube), Neville lambasted Hojlund for his performance for United against Tottenham on Wednesday night. He said:

“Particularly Hojlund, he’s struggling like mad, the boy, he can’t control a ball, he can’t make a run, the service to him isn’t great. The reality of the performance for me, I wasn’t surprised by the team, but if Bruno’s not on his game then you’ve basically lost everything almost and Bruno probably had one of his most challenging games.”

Hojlund joined United from Atalanta for £72m at 20 years of age, with a lot of buzz around his valuation. However, the 22-year-old has failed to live up to the massive expectations at the club, becoming another high-valued failed signing.

United’s frivolous spending in the past has caught up to them as they are facing a major financial crisis. The Red Devils needed the Europa League victory to secure the next season’s Champions League spot that comes with a massive financial reward.

Irrespective of their finances, the number nine remains a priority as United cannot continue to rely on Hojlund and Zirkzee. Amorim needs to rebuild the spine of the team, and it starts with the front position for the Red Devils.
