Manchester United's summer transfer plans could be in jeopardy after they failed to secure a spot in next season's European football. Matheus Cunha, who had verbally agreed to join the club this summer, is reportedly reconsidering his decision following Wednesday's Europa League defeat.

The Red Devils needed to win the trophy to guarantee a return to the Champions League, but that opportunity was snatched away by Tottenham Hotspur with a 1-0 victory in Bilbao. With Ruben Amorim's side potentially finishing as low as 17th in the Premier League, there will be no European escapades on the cards for next term.

Missing out on Champions League football not only has financial implications but also diminishes the appeal of a move to Old Trafford.

Before the all-English clash at the San Mames Stadium, Amorim made it clear that United's plans would differ depending on the outcome of the match.

Chief executive Omar Berrada has also previously stated that the club will support the Portuguese head coach regardless of their status, reports the Express.

Naturally, questions have arisen about whether United's well-publicised pursuit of Wolves forward Cunha is now in danger of falling through.

The Brazilian has also been linked with Arsenal and Newcastle United, two clubs set for European action after the summer break.

However, Cunha is reportedly steadfast in his wish to depart Wolves for Manchester - a significant boost for Amorim, who is in dire need of bolstering his attacking options.

According to Fabrizio Romano, there will be no hitches with the transfer. United have informed Cunha of their intention to activate his £62.5million release clause.

The 25 year old has crucially indicated that he desires the move regardless of whether Champions League football is available or not.

It's suggested that Cunha will join United once the summer transfer window commences, likely as Amorim's first signing of a pivotal period.

No Champions League football could affect the M16 giants' other ambitions, though, particularly due to the £100m to £200m they will lose out on for their participation.

Romano has reported that United are seeking a second versatile forward in addition to a new striker, with Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres named as Amorim's ideal target.

However, with Arsenal among the Swede's top suitors, a move to Old Trafford seems unlikely unless his former coach can perform miracles to lure him.

Any hope of spending big money on another forward, with Lyon's Rayan Cherki and Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo linked, also seems improbable before player sales.

But Cunha is set to be the first arrival of what United need to be a transformative summer both on and off the pitch.
