Liverpool officially confirms retirement of Anfield legend

It’s been a season of emotion and memories at Anfield.

The Reds have fought on all fronts, with the Premier League title race going down to the wire.

And as the final day approaches, there’s more than just silverware on the line.

For many fans, matchdays at Anfield are more than just football.

It’s about the sound, the energy, the feeling that something big is about to happen.

Before the first whistle, there’s always a voice.

A voice fans have known for decades.

Whether it’s announcing the starting XI or choosing the perfect song before kickoff, that familiar tone has been part of the routine.

Part of the club.

Now, change is coming.

Liverpool FC have officially confirmed that George Sephton, widely known as ‘The Voice of Anfield’, will retire at the end of the season.

He will make his final appearance this Sunday when Liverpool take on Crystal Palace in their last match of the 2024/25 campaign — a game where the Reds will also lift the Premier League trophy.

Sephton has been the stadium announcer since 1971.

That’s 53 years of being behind the mic at Anfield.

His voice has been present through some of the greatest nights in the club’s history — from European glory to title wins.

He hasn’t just worked at Anfield.

He’s become part of it.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Sephton said, “It’s been the honour of a lifetime to be known as ‘The Voice of Anfield’.”

“I’ve been privileged to have a front-row seat at some of the greatest occasions in football history – memories I will cherish forever.”

He added, “Anfield has been my second home for over 50 years, and I’ve loved every moment.”

“But the time is right to pass the microphone on.”

Paul Cuttill, vice-president of stadium operations, said, “George Sephton is more than just a stadium announcer – he is a part of the fabric of Anfield.”

“His voice has soundtracked countless unforgettable moments in our club’s history, and his presence in the gantry will be deeply missed.”

“We thank him for his remarkable tenure and dedication to the club.”

Sunday will be more than just a title celebration.

It will be the end of an era.
