Manchester United are out to overhaul their squad this summer after their Europa League final defeat
Manchester United might have a tougher time in the summer transfer market after they failed to secure Champions League football next season.
Any departures would help raise funds to bolster Amorim’s squad heading into the 2025-26 campaign. The likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes are being linked with exits and the Red Devils will need to weigh up which players need to leave and those who must stay.
United do expect to sell Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia once the window opens with sales of those players expected to generate over £100m, which can help Amorim.
No Champions League football makes things tough
United will not be able to offer targets European football, which could be a stumbling block in negotiations. Liam Delap, for example, has held talks with the Old Trafford outfit but is also attracting interest from Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Chelsea. Both of those clubs will have some form of European football next season, as they battle for a Champions League place heading into the final day.
Amorim is keen to sign players who want to play for United, as opposed to stars who would only have moved to the club to experience Champions League football. He said earlier this month: “If a player only wants to come to Manchester United to play Champions League, then he won't come. We want players who want to represent United, not players who want to play certain competitions."
And, according Fabrizio Romano - there is one star who still wants to make the move to United despite their failure to reach the Champions League next season.
Fabrizio Romano claims Matheus Cunha will sign for Manchester United
Speaking on the GIVEMESPORT Market Madness Podcast, the transfer expert insisted Wolves ace Matheus Cunha would be joining United regardless of Champions League qualification. He said: "United already told Matheus Cunha that they are prepared to trigger the clause, so there will be no issues.
“And so I think it's going to be the first signing of the summer for United. And it's important to say that the player wanted this move, regardless of Champions League football or not, regardless of what happens in the Europa League final. Cunha wants to play for Manchester United, and my understanding is that he will play for Manchester United."
Cunha has scored 33 goals and provided 15 assists in 91 games for Wolves. That’s a total of 48 goal contributions and averages to slightly more than one goal or assist every other game.
"He is a special player. He can do things that can make the difference in small details,” his head coach Vitor Pereira said of him earlier in the campaign. "I think it is not about work, it is about quality, his individual quality. "Matheus Cunha is a player, in my opinion, who can reach high standards in this league.”
