Arsenal will struggle to sign Anthony Gordon this summer if Newcastle United qualify for the Champions League, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what his sources have told him about Arsenal’s pursuit of the Magpies’ number 10.
Gordon has been on Mikel Arteta’s transfer shortlist for some time and Football Insider revealed last month that Arsenal will have to spend “big, big money” in order to sign the England winger this summer.
That Newcastle price tag has been reported at roughly £100million, but Football Insider sources have now said that the Magpies are not “entertaining” bids which could see them lose their best players.
Sources have told Football Insider that Champions League qualification will “go a long way” towards Newcastle retaining their star men, and this will hamper Arsenal‘s efforts to complete a deal for Gordon.

Arsenal hit with setback in Gordon transfer chase
Football Insider revealed on Friday (23 May) that Arsenal have been given a boost in their bid to sign Rodrygo from Real Madrid this summer, and he could prove to be a more feasible option than Gordon.

Speaking on the new Inside Track, O’Rourke said that a wide forward is one of Arteta’s priorities ahead of the transfer window, but Arsenal could miss out on Gordon if Newcastle reach the Champions League.
“[Gordon] is obviously another player who is on that list of Arsenal targets to play as a wide forward – bringing in a new wide man is a priority for Mikel Arteta”, he told Football Insider.
“Newcastle are not really entertaining losing any of their best players right now.
“They want to build on what they’ve achieved this season, and if they can qualify for the Champions League, that’ll go a long way to keeping their top players.”

Newcastle progress to turn Arsenal away from Gordon transfer
Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Newcastle on Sunday (18 May) was a bad-tempered affair which left the Magpies in a final-day shoot-out for a Champions League place, and only raised speculation over Gordon’s future.
However, Newcastle are still well placed to return to Europe’s elite and will therefore be confident they can keep hold of Gordon this summer, and that’s likely to result in Arsenal turning attention elsewhere.
With Liverpool also in the race for Gordon and only set to drive his asking price further north, Arsenal’s priorities in the window could shift as they put all their eggs in a striker-shaped basket which looks set to take the form of Viktor Gyokeres.
