Davide Ancelotti seems set to take over at Rangers.

The Italian was out of the running after reports emerged that he was set to follow his father, Carlo Ancelotti, to Brazil until the 2026 World Cup.

However, the Real Madrid coach performed a U-turn and wants to start his managerial career this summer, which could open up the Ibrox vacancy.

Ancelotti appointment close at Rangers

Steven Gerrard and Ancelotti were the two names on the Gers’ shortlist to take over the role that was relinquished by Barry Ferguson at the end of the season.

Ramon Alvarez de Mon (24 May) has now reported that Ancelotti is close to giving his commitment to the Gers.

MORE RANGERS STORIES

Jim White had claimed on talkSPORT (21 May) that Gerrard was set to take over the reins, but it appears that he will not after the latest update.

The ex-Light Blues boss was in Bahrain on holiday in recent days, so if he was the man, an appointment would not be likely anytime soon.

Rangers are taking a risk either way

If the latest update is correct, then the 49ers are taking a major risk as Ancelotti junior has no experience as a manager.

The majority of his experience is working under his father, and it is unknown whether he will be able to handle the responsibility in Govan.

Club Role Tenure

Real Madrid Assistant Manager 2021-2025

Everton Assistant Manager 2019-2021

Napoli Assistant Manager 2018-2019

Bayern Munich Assistant Manager 2016-2017

Ancelotti’s path so far.

His connections with Los Blancos could come in handy, with the likes of David Alaba and Ferland Mendy linked with the Auchenhowie outfit, if he takes over.

However, there will be significant doubts over his abilities as there also would be with Gerrard, if he was appointed.

The 44-year-old has had miserable stints at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq since leaving Scottish football and Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic are much better than anything that he faced previously.

It would be a huge gamble to bring Gerrard back in the dugout, even if it would give supporters a boost, given their affection for the ex-Liverpool man.

The task at hand in Govan is massive, the squad is in need of major surgery and whether he is the right man to oversee it is questionable.
