Scott McTominay has been crowned Serie A's Most Valuable Player after a stellar season with Napoli.

The former Manchester United midfielder played a crucial role in their title triumph, scoring the Scudetto-winning goal as his acrobatic overhead effort opened the scoring in the 2-0 victory over Cagliari, with Romelu Lukaku scoring the second.

The Scotsman, who made a £25m switch from Old Trafford to Italy earlier this season, is adored in Naples and has been instrumental in their success, scoring 13 goals and providing four assists. His impressive tally nearly equals half of the 29 goals he netted during his 255 appearances for Manchester United.

McTominay's contributions were crucial as Napoli pipped Inter Milan to the title by just one point, earning him the prestigious MVP award for the 2024/25 season. Overwhelmed with emotion, the 28-year-old was reduced to tears at the end of the game as he fell to the turf.

"I'm lost for words," McTominay admitted post-match. "It's incredible you know, the sacrifice that every single player in the group has put forward to the cause.

"And the people deserve it because they've been behind us from day one, and for me to come and experience this is a dream."

McTominay has written his name alongside Napoli legends such as Diego Maradona and Edinson Cavani in Napoli's history books, with the former Manchester United midfielder having become a fan favourite at Napoli since his arrival at the start of the season.

His name is proudly displayed on flags around the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and he's even earned himself a local nickname, 'McFratm', which loosely translates to 'McBro'.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, McTominay expressed his joy at being in Italy: "I saw the passionate fans, I saw the coach, I saw the players and I saw an opportunity.

"I took it, I didn't look back. It didn't take me long to make the decision because I knew that was what I wanted and I'll never have any regrets in my life."

He added: "As soon as I put my mind to something I want to do it, that's it. There's no holding me back. I love this place, I love the fans, I love my team-mates."

Unlike United, who lost the Europa League final to Tottenham on Wednesday, McTominay will be playing in the Champions League next season. McTominay was sold by Erik ten Hag to make way for the £42m signing of Manuel Ugarte from PSG, who was an unused substitute in the final in Bilbao.
