Davide Ancelotti may not be as close to Rangers as thought, despite his farewell from Real Madrid.

The Italian looked to have ruled himself out of contention when it was revealed that he would be following his father, Carlo Ancelotti, to Brazil until the end of the 2026 World Cup.

However, he performed a recent U-turn and decided that he wished to start his managerial career this summer instead.

It seems like the Gers were closing in on a deal, but that may not be the case.

Ancelotti Rangers agreement reports are wide of the mark

Reports in Spain had suggested that Ancelotti was close to agreeing to become the new manager at Ibrox.

MORE RANGERS STORIES

However, Chris Jack (24 May) has now insisted that those reports are premature and no deal has been agreed upon, with no announcement close.

It states that the ex-Real Madrid coach will hold further talks in the next few days and is keen to take on the role under the 49ers Enterprises.

Ancelotti would be an exciting risk for Rangers

Ancelotti has no track record in a managerial position, as he has solely served as his father’s assistant so far in his coaching career.

There are huge question marks over his ability to lead the Gers forward, given his inexperience in the dugout.

Club Role Tenure

Real Madrid Assistant Manager 2021-2025

Everton Assistant Manager 2019-2021

Napoli Assistant Manager 2018-2019

Bayern Munich Assistant Manager 2016-2017

Ancelotti’s path so far.

He would bring an exciting new brand of football and contacts that could bring the likes of David Alaba and Ferland Mendy to Govan from the Santiago Bernabeu.

There is no guarantee that he would be a success at Auchenhowie, even with the connections that he has and the impact that could have on transfers.

The 49ers Enterprises group have to get their next appointment right when they come into the Govan outfit, otherwise the gap to Celtic could increase rather than decrease.

If they bring in the wrong man, it could set the Light Blues back even further, given the huge work that has to be done in terms of the playing squad, as it was subpar under Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson.

It would be a major gamble and if it does not pay off, it would be a poor start to the new era.
