Sunderland beat Sheffield United at Wembley to clinch promotion

Outgoing Sunderland winger Tom Watson delivered the ultimate leaving present by plundering a last gasp winner to fire the Black Cats back into the Premier League.

Watson, who will join Brighton this summer, popped up with a dramatic intervention in the 95th minute to cap a remarkable turnaround for Sunderland, who had trailed Sheffield United 1-0 before second half goals from Watson and Eliezer Mayenda.

A goal befitting the occasion helped Chris Wilder's side hit the front; Gustavo Hamer drew in three Sunderland defenders on the break before threading an exquisite ball into the path of Tyrese Campbell, who finished smartly beyond Anthony Patterson.

VAR intervened to deny Harris Burrows a second after Patterson was unsighted as the Black Cats - rocked by the early loss of Luke O'Nien to a dislocated shoulder - headed in at the break a goal down.

Sunderland huffed and puffed without overly troubling the Blades before Mayenda sent a thunderbolt into the top corner to restore parity and set up a tense finale.

And Watson signed off in Sunderland colours in style by placing an inch-perfect strike into the bottom corner to lift the roof off Wembley stadium.
