A major UK high street tech giant is cutting around 80 head office roles as it looks to trim costs across its business. Currys has entered a consultation period, impacting staff across all head office functions, according to Retail Gazette

The retailer is looking to reduce its central cost base by 10% this year, facing a £30m increase to its tax bill after changes to employers’ National Insurance contributions and National Minimum Wage. In total, Currys employs around 15,000 people across the UK. It is not believed that retail staff are not impacted in its cost savings plan.

A Currys spokesperson told RG: “Currys is winning in a challenging market, and our performance continues to strengthen. But in an environment where we have new Government headwinds of over £30m this year, we need to work hard to continue to maintain this success. We are working to support those colleagues affected.”

Currys upgraded its profit outlook this week to be around £162m for the year to May 3, which beat its previous forecast of £160m and original guidance of between £145m and £155m.

The Daily Star recently reported that Trent Alexander-Arnold appears to have been banned from entering any Currys store in Liverpool following his recent announcement that he is leaving the club.

The Premier League star, 26, has been with Liverpool FC since he was a boy but said in a heartfelt social media post yesterday (May 5) that he won't be renewing his contract at the end of the season. In response, Currys today (May 6) posted a clip on Instagram showing an A4 print of a smiling Alexander-Arnold.

Above his photo is the stern message: "BANNED - please do NOT enter" as the words 'Liverpool admin not taking the Trent news well...' flash across the video. While the post's caption reads 'Banned from all Currys stores in Liverpool'.

Many fans left a number of 'laughing' emojis while others were unsure if the ban was genuine. "Is this for real?" wrote one person as a couple of others commented with "Impressive". Another added "You always make my day".

Currys isn't the first place Alexander-Arnold has found himself out of favour with in the city following news of his departure. A post on Popworld Liverpool's X/Twitter yesterday simply stated: “Barred @TrentAA”.

The Star also reported that recent figures from the ONS show that redundancy rates are climbing nationwide after a decrease last summer. Many experts predicted a shift in the job market to start in 2025 due to the rise in employer's National Insurance set to kick in this April.

However, those who have been made redundant don't have to face the job market alone. The Department for Work and Pensions and its partners offer a variety of support to help bridge the gap between jobs in different ways.
