Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is in line for a new role with Bayer Leverkusen - if latest reports are to be believed.

The Dutchman was in the dugout at Old Trafford from 2022 until October last year, leading them to two domestic cup triumphs during that tenure. However, after a poor start to the 2024/2025 season, Ten Hag was dismissed and replaced by Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim.

The change in direction hasn't exactly paid off for United, with the club currently sitting 16th place in the Premier League table with just 39 points. The team also fell to defeat against Tottenham in the Europa League final earlier this week, extinguishing any hopes of Champions League qualification.

Since his departure, Ten Hag has been linked with several jobs, including a shock possible return to former club Ajax. However, it now appears as though Leverkusen are preparing to make the 55-year-old their next manager, with Xabi Alonso set to take over at Real Madrid.

According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, Leverkusen have reached an agreement in principle with Ten Hag and are working to finalise the deal. He has prior experience in Germany, having coached Bayern Munich II from 2013 to 2015.

Leverkusen were crowned Bundesliga champions in the 2023/2024 season, going unbeaten throughout the league campaign. However, this season, Alonso's team have struggled to replicate that form and finished second, 13 points behind champions Bayern Munich.

The task awaiting Ten Hag at the BayArena won't be straightforward - with a major rebuild expected this summer. Defender Jonathan Tah is reportedly set to join Bayern on a free transfer, while both Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz have been heavily linked with moves to Premier League champions Liverpool.
