Former [Liverpool](https://liverpooloffside.sbnation.com/) manager and current Liverpool legend Jürgen Klopp has been pulled into the now weeks-long debate about the reception that Trent Alexander-Arnold received after announcing he was leaving the club. Liverpool fans booed the right-back when he was substituted in for their match against Arsenal.
Alexander-Arnold came up from the ranks under Klopp and became the world class player that he is today thanks to the German’s influence and training. It’s no surprise that he has a special place in his heart for him, and that he was frustrated by the fan response. While current head coach Arne Slot was more political in his answers, Klopp had no such restraints.
When asked about it at the LFC Foundation Gala Ball, [Klopp said](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/jurgen-klopp-switch-telly-off-31714093), “I don’t want to tell anyone what they should think, I don’t want to say what you have to think but I can tell you what you think is wrong. I am an old man and I don’t waste time with hiding my opinion.
“I watched the game when he came on and I heard the booing. I’m old so it my be my hearing so I turned up the volume and said: ‘That’s booing’. I needed another 10 seconds to realise and then I switched the telly off. I honestly could not have been more disappointed in this moment. This is not us, 100%.
“I don’t tell you you should not be disappointed or angry, I tell you: ‘Don’t forget’. This club does not forget. We are famous for not forgetting. We don’t forget anything. We don’t forget the good thing and we don’t forget the bad thing. But we ignore the bad things and remember the good things.
“We don’t forget anything. We don’t forget the good thing and we don’t forget the bad thing. But we ignore the bad things and remember the good things. You don’t have to be happy he is going but don’t forget what he did for this club because I can’t forget it.”
Alexander-Arnold himself took to Twitter to post his response, emphasizing the 20 years of commitment he’d given the club.
The Reds play their final game of the season on Sunday against Crystal Palace before officially being crowned champions. It will be interesting to see how fans treat Alexander-Arnold on this day of celebration and with the potential for Jeremie Frimpong to take his place when he leaves.
