Lakers Went After Trade for $62 Million Center

The Los Angeles Lakers' 2024-25 season was marked by significant roster changes and challenges. After acquiring Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round pick, the Lakers aimed to strengthen their lineup for a deep playoff run. However, the departure of Davis left a void at the center position, which became increasingly evident as the season progressed.

The team's lack of size and interior defense contributed to their early exit from the playoffs, as they struggled against dominant big men like Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves. In an effort to address this deficiency, the Lakers pursued a trade for Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams.

The proposed deal involved sending Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, and draft capital to Charlotte in exchange for Williams. However, the trade was rescinded after Williams reportedly failed his physical examination. This decision was met with skepticism, as Williams had been actively playing significant minutes for the Hornets prior to the trade.

Before the attempted acquisition of Williams, the Lakers had explored other options to strengthen their frontcourt. According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, speaking on the Straight Fire podcast with Jason McIntyre, the Lakers reached out to the Atlanta Hawks regarding the availability of 24-year-old center Onyeka Okongwu.

McMenamin stated (h/t HoopsWire), "I do know that the Lakers made a call to the Hawks around the trade deadline about Okongwu."

Okongwu, having just completed the first year of a four-year, $62 million contract, is known for his athleticism and defensive skills, despite being slightly undersized for the center position. His skillset aligns with the Lakers' needs, particularly in providing a lob threat and improving their interior defense.

However, it's unclear how far discussions progressed between the Lakers and Hawks, and no deal materialized before the trade deadline.
