Vitor Pereira must stop Brentford from achieving something against Wolves that they haven’t…

Wolves will be looking to end the 2024/25 Premier League season on a high when they welcome Brentford to Molineux on Sunday.

It will likely be some players’ final game for the club, with the likes of Matheus Cunha on the verge of joining Manchester United and Nelson Semedo yet to sign a new contract.

Unfortunately for the home faithful, Wolves’ final day record is awful, losing each of their last seven season finales by an aggregate score of 19-2.

Pereira must turn that around if he is to stop Sunday’s opponents from breaking a nine-year record.

Brentford haven’t achieved the league double over Wolves since the 2015-16 season

After Brentford dismantled Wolves 5-3 earlier this season in a game that sparked major questions about Gary O’Neil’s future at the club, the Bees have the opportunity to complete the league double over the Old Gold.

The last time they achieved that feat was the 2015/16 season when both sides were playing in the Championship.

In that campaign, Lee Carsley’s Brentford beat Kenny Jackett’s Wolves 2-0 at Molineux in October, before Dean Smith went one better when he led the Bees to a 3-0 win at Griffin Park in February 2016.

With Thomas Frank’s side still in with the opportunity to qualify for the Europa Conference League, the London side will be a dangerous proposition on Sunday as they look to replicate their feat from nine years ago.

When Wolves last completed the league double over Brentford

The two results from the 2015/16 season summarised where both clubs were at that moment in time, Wolves finishing down in 14th, five places and seven points behind Brentford.

They would return the favour the following season, however.

By that point, Chinese conglomerate Fosun International had taken ownership of the club, replacing Jackett with the Italian manager Walter Zenga.

Under Zenga’s watch, Wolves beat the Bees 3-1 in September 2016 thanks to a brace from Joao Teixeira and a late strike from Ivan Cavaleiro.

Zenga was then dismissed a month later, with Paul Lambert eventually being appointed on a permanent basis. He would mastermind a 2-1 win at Brentford in March 2017 thanks to late goals from Matt Doherty and Helder Costa.

The result did little to save Lambert’s skin at the end of the season, however, the 55-year-old dismissed after Wolves finished in a lowly 15th place.

Ultimately, this turned out to be a good decision, as Nuno Espirito Santo was appointed and subsequently guided Wolves to the Premier League after winning the Championship with 99 points.
