Ex-Reds keeper Ben says Wrexham will be in Premier League 'within five years'

The Reds, under Phil Parkinson, have secured back-to-back-to-back promotions from the National League all the way to the Championship.

Wrexham’s latest step-up was achieved by a runners-up finish to Birmingham City in League One and the Reds can now look forward to their first season in the second tier in over four decades.

Asked whether players interested in the project would sign for the club, former Wrexham keeper Foster told Fozcast: “Yeah, I think so. I think that lure of Wrexham and what it offers, the bigger picture, to be part of something that could go on to be a monster, because I genuinely think, within five years, Wrexham will be in the Premier League.”

While that is the ultimate dream, of immediate concern is the forthcoming season in the Championship, where Wrexham will join the likes of Blackburn Rovers, West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday, in addition to Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town, all relegated from the Premier League this season.

“The next season is so, so hard for Wrexham,” added Foster, who enjoyed two spells at the Racecourse.

“Championship next year’s so hard. They just need to consolidate for a year, maybe two, maybe three.

“But then, I think, they’re going to be looking at from this point onwards, a five-year period where they’re going, ‘right, we need to be challenging in five years’ time’.”

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan also thinks Wrexham may be destined for the top flight, especially if the club makes the most of its momentum.

Jordan told talkSPORT: “I wouldn’t put it past Wrexham, with the momentum that they’ve got, to go up into the Premier League.

“I think it’s a great story for Wrexham. I think it’s a different story for football.

“It’s showing a different model, a different entertainment angle of things. It shows you that entertainment wrapped around sport now is the game in town.”

Will season five of Welcome to Wrexham be focused on a Reds’ relegation? Jordan doesn’t think so.

He added: “I don’t think they’ll come back down again. I would be amazed, pleasantly amazed, if they go straight out of this division into the Premier League.

“But, with the momentum they’ve got, you wouldn’t bet against it.”
