The Spanish U21 team has gone back on a decision to call up FC Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsí for the upcoming European Championship, giving the young defender a well-deserved rest.
The Spanish federation had reportedly considered including him in Santi Denia’s list, in part due to injuries and fixture congestion with the expanded FIFA Club World Cup affecting other options.
In the end, Cubarsí has been given a break instead as he has completed a very demanding season which came after participating in tune-up for UEFA Euro 2024 (he was ultimately left off the final list) and winning the Gold Medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
The U21 championship would take place after the UEFA Nations League ends, and Cubarsí is slated to appear in that tournament with Spain’s senior side.
The young defender went through a stomach virus that made him lose weight and struggle physically Barcelona’s biggest matches of the season against Real Madrid and Inter Milan recently. That made it even more important for him to have a much-needed break instead of representing a Spanish youth team.
