Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo is the latest Premier League player to wear a mask after suffering a facial injury.

The Ecuador international took a blow to the face during Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat away to Newcastle United on May 11 and needed to wear the protective headgear for the 1-0 win at home to Manchester United last Friday.

Caicedo wore the mask once again during Friday’s training session ahead of Chelsea’s crucial Premier League match against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

According to MailOnline, Caicedo wanted the mask to be coloured ‘Chelsea blue’, but the club sought advice from the Premier League and were told that black is the preferred colour.

The 23-year-old, who was signed from Brighton for £115 million in 2023, has been a pivotal figure in Chelsea’s midfield this season and won the club’s Player of the Season award as well as the Players’ Player of the season award at a ceremony at Grosvenor House earlier this month.

Chelsea, meanwhile, currently sit fifth in the Premier League ahead of the final day of the season, level on 66 points with Aston Villa and Newcastle United, two points behind Manchester City and one point ahead of Forest.

If Chelsea secure a victory at The City Ground on Sunday, a top-five finish and a place in next season’s Champions League will be guaranteed.

A draw against Forest would mean Chelsea will be relying on results elsewhere to secure a top-five finish. They would need either need Aston Villa to draw or lose against Manchester United, or Newcastle United to lose at home to Everton.

If Chelsea are beaten by Forest, it would almost certainly mean that they would miss out on Champions League qualification as Newcastle would have to lose by three more goals to Everton in order to drop out of the top five.

If Chelsea finish seventh, they will be in the Conference League once again next season unless they beat Real Betis in the final next Wednesday, which would secure them a place in the Europa League.
