With Kyle Macaulay, Graham Potter, David Sullivan and [Karren Brady](https://www.claretandhugh.info/exclusive-brady-in-the-hammers-driving-seat-with-banzuzi-bid/) set to lead player negotiations during the upcoming transfer window, questions are already being raised about the decision not to replace Tim Steidten with someone of Dan Ashworth’s calibre to fill that crucial ‘deal brokering’ role.
West Ham’s, Vice-Chairman, Karen Brady, in particular has faced scrutiny for her role in the the failed transfer of Ezechiel Banzuzi where it was widely reported that a “take it or leave it” offer was swiftly rejected by OH Leuven. (_More “Iron Lady than Irons Vice-chair”?_) The Belgian Pro League club was reportedly put off by West Ham’s hardline negotiating approach and opted not to pursue further conversations.
The Dutch professional footballer eventually signed for RB Leizpig in a deal reportedly worth £13.7m on a five year contract. To further frustrate Hammers supporters, the 20 year old attacking midfielder later reflected on the collapse of the West Ham move by saying “I wanted to leave, that was on my mind, but in retrospect, it’s good that it did not happen. West Ham is not doing so well, it’s not the type of football I want to play.”
This isn’t the first time West Ham have stumbled in transfer talks. The failed pursuit of Portugese midfielder, William Carvalho, remains one of the most infamous episodes, featuring a public war of words between Sporting Lisbon officials and David Sullivan. Sporting accused West Ham of never submitting a formal bid, while the London club denied the claim. The Daily Mirror at the time even reported that the Portugese team were considering reporting West Ham to FIFA for an illegal approach for the player.
With the June 1st transfer window fast approaching, Hammers fans will be hoping for a more competent and drama free negotiating process – but only time will tell.
