Jordan Pickford has been surprisingly quiet on social media after Sunderland sealed their spot in the 2025/26 Premier League with a win over Sheffield United on Saturday.

Tommy Watson’s dramatic late winner secured the Black Cats a 2-1 win at Wembley in the Championship play-off final, allowing Pickford the chance to take on his boyhood club in the top flight next season.

Washington-born Pickford, 31, hasn’t posted anything on his social media accounts since Sunderland’s win, but he has snuck in a cheeky response to the Wearside club’s post about goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.

Patterson man of the match in Sunderland’s play-off final win

Patterson, 25, was without a doubt Sunderland’s man of the match as they won at Wembley.

He pulled off an incredible save to deny Kieffer Moore early on and also spared the blushes of Dennis Cirkin when the Sunderland full-back’s defensive blunder allowed a one-on-one opportunity that was denied by the Black Cats’ number one.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

Sunderland’s official Instagram account posted an image of Patterson with his man of the match award after full-time at Wembley, hailing the shot-stopper’s “heroic” performance at the Home of Football.

This will no doubt all be fairly interesting to Everton as back in September, HITC reported that the Blues are keen on signing Patterson if they ever need to replace Pickford.

Pickford responds to Sunderland’s post on Instagram

Pickford was joined by Jude Bellingham in responding to the Instagram post with a like.

The Everton goalkeeper hasn’t actually spoken out about Sunderland’s promotion – maybe he’s waiting for the Toffees’ season to properly come to an end on Sunday.

David Moyes’ side will bring their season to a close – ironically – against Sunderland’s bitter rivals Newcastle on 25 May.

Everton travel to St James’ Park knowing that Eddie Howe’s men will be eager to earn a victory that will seal qualification to the 2025/26 Champions League.

Pickford will obviously do everything in his power to stop that happening but Everton won’t move up or down in the Premier League table on Sunday with a 13th-placed finish already solidified ahead of their move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium in the summer.

It’ll no doubt be a great game to see Sunderland being the first opponents at Everton’s new stadium due to the subplots of Moyes and Pickford taking on their former club who are back in the big time after eight years away.
