Five Nottingham Forest players who could say City Ground farewells against Chelsea

Nottingham Forest sign off for the season this afternoon with a blockbuster final-day encounter with Chelsea.

The Reds take on the Blues at the City Ground (4pm kick-off) with Champions League qualification on the line. It is all to play for as the race for a top-five finish in the Premier League has come down to the wire.

Whatever happens, it has been a brilliant campaign for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. But whichever European competition they find themselves in for next term, changes will be made to the squad over the summer.

The transfer window will see incomings and outgoings Trentside. For some players, today’s game might turn out to be their final involvement with the club. Below, NottinghamshireLive takes a look at who could be bidding farewell when the final whistle blows on the 2024/25 season.

Alex Moreno

It could be that the Aston Villa loanee has already pulled on the Garibaldi for the last time. It would come as little surprise if he is not involved today.

The full-back has not been included in the match squad for the last four Premier League games. The last time he got out on the pitch was the 1-0 defeat to Everton last month.

The Reds have an option to sign him permanently but the signs are not particularly encouraging on that front. He has been linked with a return to former club Real Betis.

Harry Toffolo

Out of contract at the end of this term, as yet there has been no indication the left-back is on course for a new deal. As it stands, therefore, he will depart as a free agent this summer.

If it does transpire that this afternoon represents Toffolo’s final Forest hurrah, he will leave having firmly established himself as a cult hero at the City Ground. A model professional and a class act, he wrote his name into club folklore with his dramatic clearance off the line against Tottenham Hotspur a few weeks ago.

Willy Boly

Forest hold an option to retain the centre-back’s services for a further 12 months so a decision over his future will be revealed soon. He was linked with a switch to Saudi Arabia not so long ago, so there is certainly a question mark over whether he will still be at the club for next season.

Nuno values the veteran defender’s experience and the influence he has in the dressing room. However, he was not in the match squad for last weekend’s 2-1 win over West Ham United so it remains to be seen whether he will be on the bench today.

Wayne Hennessey

The Welshman is coming to the end of the short-term deal he signed in January. It is unlikely he will be offered fresh terms even though he has been a valued member of the goalkeepers’ union Trentside as third-choice between the posts.

Hennessey was offered a coaching job with his country’s Under-21s side earlier this year. There has been no word on whether he is set to take that up. If he is to remain at the City Ground, it would likely be in a similar role.

Morgan Gibbs-White

Reds fans will certainly hope there are many more appearances in the Garibaldi to come for the England international. However, his future is in the spotlight ahead of the summer transfer window amid interest from Manchester City.

The 25-year-old has plenty of other admirers, but Pep Guardiola’s side are particularly keen as they search for a replacement for the departing Kevin De Bruyne. That the City boss made a beeline for Gibbs-White in full view of the TV cameras after his team’s FA Cup semi-final victory over Forest last month only fuelled the speculation.

The Reds hold all the cards and have no desire to sell their prized asset, but their resolve to hang on to him may well be tested. Supporters will no doubt have everything crossed Gibbs-White stays put.
