Everton face a difficult challenge to sign Angel Gomes ahead of Champions League clubs this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about Everton’s attempted bid for the England midfielder.
Gomes as already confirmed his departure from Lille and will enter the market as a free agent this summer, with Everton interested alongside Tottenham and West Ham as well as Marseille further afield.
Football Insider revealed on Friday (23 May) that West Ham have already seen offers rejected to sign Gomes on a free transfer, and Everton will also face an uphill battle given the level of competition for him.
Sources have told Football Insider that Marseille‘s interest in Gomes is concrete, and as the French side are set to play in the Champions League next season, they have an advantage over Everton in the race.
Everton see Gomes as a “smart signing”, but Football Insider sources have said that the 24-year-old is prioritising his place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad and wants to play Champions League football.

Everton outsiders to complete ‘hard deal’ for Gomes
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 20 May that Everton had a bid lined up for Gomes in the wake of his departure from Lille, but they’re far from the only club with similar plans.
Speaking on the new Inside Track, O’Rourke said that when compared to clubs like Marseille who can tempt Gomes with Champions League football next season, Everton will struggle to complete his signing.
“I’m sure Gomes right now will be weighing up all options that are available to him”, he told Football Insider.
“He’ll be looking to see the ideal destination for him to be playing regular first team football, and to keep himself in the plans of Thomas Tuchel for the England squad ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
“Marseille are keen on keeping the player in Ligue 1 next season and they’ve got Champions League football to offer to Gomes as well, so it’ll be a hard deal to do for Everton, just due to the competition.
“Everton, we all know, are probably going to be needing midfield reinforcements for next season… it will be a smart signing by Everton, there’s no doubt about that.
“I think there will be a lot of interest in him, and maybe clubs who can offer Champions League football will sway him to maybe make that move, instead of [moving] to Bramley-Moore Dock next season.”

Everton to prioritise midfield rebuild at Hill Dickinson Stadium
With Tottenham’s success in the Europa League booking them a place at the Champions League table next season, they too will likely go above Everton in the multi-club battle to sign Gomes this summer.
Football Insider revealed on 12 May that David Moyes is a big fan of Sean Longstaff and Everton are well placed to complete a £12million deal for the Newcastle midfielder as a potential alternative to Gomes.
With Abdoulaye Doucoure set to leave Everton at the end of the season and Idrissa Gueye potentially also bound for the exit door, it’s increasingly clear that a top-level midfielder like Gomes is exactly the kind of player the Toffees need to target.
