Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Marhsall Munetsi has revealed he almost forced through his move in the January transfer window.
The striker [has been speaking to L’Equipe](https://www.lequipe.fr/Football/Actualites/-je-pense-que-reims-peut-le-faire-marshall-munetsi-croit-a-la-victoire-de-son-ancienne-equipe-contre-le-psg-en-finale-de-coupe-de-france/1563965) about the move and how he had to talk Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot into accepting it.
The 28-year-old moved to Wolves in January in an €18m move at the end of the window as Vitor Pereira’s side looked to strengthen for the second half of the campaign.
He had been at Reims since 2019 and proven to be a favourite in that time, with 21 goals and 14 assists in 159 games before his departure.
They were naturally reluctant to let him go, particularly with them competing to stay in Ligue 1 this season. They also find themselves in the Coupe de France final against Paris Saint-Germain.
A deal was eventually done, though, and he’s been a regular for Wolves since as they’ve risen up the table away from relegation trouble to mid-table security.
Munetsi now has to watch his former side from afar, wishing them success in the final, admitting that part of him does regret that he cannot be there to compete with them.
“Everything happened very quickly in the final moments of the transfer window,” he said.
“I was even afraid it wouldn’t happen. Reims wanted to keep me, but I spoke to President Caillot to explain that it was time to live my dream. He’s like a father to me, so I told him that a son should know how to leave the cocoon at some point.
“There’s inevitably a part of me that regrets when I see what’s happening, but there’s another part that tells me that I’m fulfilled. I’m in the best league in the world, which is what I’ve always wanted.
“In Zimbabwe, the Premier League is the only league we had access to when I was little, so it’s an accomplishment. People back home can also watch me more easily now, so expectations are rising.”
