Former Aston Villa striker Lewis Grabban could be in line for a lofty promotion at Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest.

Grabban returned to Forest, for whom he scored 56 goals in 149 games following his Villa loan in 2018, last August to take up a coaching position with their B team.

But the 37-year-old is said to have impressed Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis to such an extent that he could take over from Ross Wilson as chief football officer this summer.

Wilson has been linked with a senior recruitment role at League One side Huddersfield Town and, according to The Sun's Alan Nixon, Forest would look in-house for his replacement.

Grabban scored eight goals in an 18-game loan spell at Villa Park and was part of the side that lost to Fulham in the 2018 Championship play-off final.

Steve Bruce wanted to sign the striker permanently but Villa couldn't stump up the £6m Bournemouth demanded and Grabban moved to the City Ground instead.

Both Villa and Forest have enjoyed sharp rises in recent years and are among those chasing Champions League football on the final day of the Premier League season.

Villa need to beat Manchester United to stand any chance of finishing inside the top five, whereas Forest need to defeat Chelsea and hope results elsewhere go their way.
