'I miss it' - Russell Martin breaks silence on return to management amid Leicester City links

Leicester City-linked Russell Martin has said he hopes to return to the managerial dugout soon, following his sacking from Southampton at the end of last year.

Like the Foxes, the Saints were relegated from the Premier League and made an unsuccessful managerial change midway through the campaign in an attempt to reverse their fortunes. As the season draws to a close, uncertainty still surrounds Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future at the King Power Stadium, with the Dutchman unable to inspire a significant turnaround in league form.

Martin, who was dismissed by Southampton in December, has been linked with the Leicester job in recent weeks. Speaking during coverage of the Championship play-off final between Sunderland and Sheffield United, he addressed his future and made clear his desire to return to management, despite having appreciated a much-needed break.

"I hope so [to return soon]," Martin said. "I honestly haven't got a clue at the moment, but I hope so.

"I miss it. Days like today definitely make you miss it—not even just moments like this, but being involved in something with a team. Looking at the coaching staff and the players, yes, you miss that.

"I’ve enjoyed the break. It’s been a great time to reflect and take stock, but yes, I hope to be back in a dugout at some point soon."

Leicester City will play their final Premier League game on Sunday away to Bournemouth, who, in contrast, have had a superb season that saw them chasing European qualification. Next season, however, the Foxes will return to the Championship as they look to bounce back at the first attempt.

As it stands, Leicester sit 18th in the table on 25 points, with Ipswich Town one place below in 19th and Southampton further adrift in 20th with just 12 points. Regardless of the standings or the uncertainty over his future, Van Nistelrooy will be hoping his side can end a difficult campaign on a positive note.
