Report: Bayern Munich targeting Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma, have already met with winger

It is no secret that Bayern Munich is looking to refresh its group of wingers. The Bavarians are presently hellbent on securing Florian Wirtz, doing whatever it takes to get the deal done. They said that contingency plans aren’t being considered, but would they make an exception for this Premier League player?

Bayern are monitoring Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma (28). Bayern scouts have been in Brighton several times to watch Mitoma live in action. The Japanese international would cost €40-45m.

Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg is also reporting that Bayern Munich has met with Mitoma:

Max Eberl and Christoph Freund have already met personally with Kaoru #Mitoma’s agents as revealed yesterday.

Mitoma has signalled that he would be open to a move!

⚠️ FC Bayern have been informed that a transfer could be possible for around €50 million.

Brighton are keen to keep him, but Mitoma is currently high on Bayern’s list of potential replacements for either Kingsley Coman or Leroy Sané. No agreements/offer yet. Bayern also in contact with Jorge Mendes/Rafael Leao.

BFW Analysis

This deal won’t be worth it given that Mitoma is the same age as Leroy Sané, someone Bayern is unwilling to extend, and his stats are frankly disappointing. Mitoma’s stats this season read: 11 goals and three assists in 40 games (2921 minutes) for a total of 0.35 G/A per game. Sané on the other hand has 13 goals and six assists in 45 games (2377 minutes) for 0.42 G/A per game. Their goals per minute ratios are 266 (Mitoma) and 183 (Sané).

Before you come at me with the “he’s with a lesser team, look what happened to Michael Olise after Bayern signed him” argument, Olise has already notched better numbers last season than Mitoma which explained why Bayern went for him. Olise had 10 goals and six assists in 19 Premier League outings* with Crystal Palace (0.84 G/A per game, 1278 minutes). Mitoma had a grand total of three goals in 26 appearances** (0.12 G/A).

Stats are from Transfermarkt.

*Olise only played in the Premier League with Palace.

**All competitions, applies to other players that were compared with him in this article apart from Olise (see above).

The news that Bayern Munich had coughed up the Florian Wirtz transfer was shocking. Even more stunning was that it was Liverpool FC, who ultimately won the Germany international’s heart. So...what next? Let’s rehash how it all went down, why it happened, and then talk about what might on tap next for the Bavarians, who have to start their transfer dealings all over again.
