Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo has spent the past few years in Saudi Arabia.
It was a move that nobody saw coming.
When he was playing at the peak of his powers in Europe, nobody would have had the Arabia as a stop in his legendary career.
Yet, when he joined left United to join Al-Nassr, it made headlines around the world.
Soon after, a plethora of footballers moved to the country as the Saudi Pro League looked to follow the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo with several other high profile names.
While the league itself has grown, Ronaldo himself hasn’t had the greatest success while there.
During his time at the club, Al-Nassr have only won one trophy – the Arab Club Champions Cup in 2023.
Safe to say, both the player and the club were expecting to win more than that when they first joined together.
Truthfully, Cristiano Ronaldo probably thought he’d win the lot while in Saudi.
If he had done so, he’d likely be playing in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
Instead, Al-Nassr are going to be at home watching fellow SPL sides Al Ahly and Al-Hilal compete in the tournament instead.
But could Ronaldo still make it to the competition?
It seems like it may be possible.
That’s because De Telegraaf are reporting that Cristiano Ronaldo is in talks with Morocco side Wydad Casablanca over a move that could see him play for them in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Nordin Amrabat, the Moroccan international who is joining Wydad from Hull City in time for the tournament, has revealed that the Portuguese legend is in talks with the club president about moving to Morocco.
Amrabat was asked about recent rumours that Ronaldo could be moving from Saudi to Africa and he didn’t hide away from the question.
“The president is very ambitious and is still working with some very big names.
“It is true that Cristiano is one of them”.
It’s likely that the president of Wydad told Amrabat about the other conversations he was having when he was negotiating with the player to move from England.
And there’s no bigger name to sell a project to you than telling you that Cristiano Ronaldo is in talks about joining too.
If it were to come off, it’d arguably be a bigger deal than Ronaldo’s move to Saudi.
While the Saudi Pro League clubs are backed with big money, Morocco doesn’t have the same reputation.
But if Ronaldo does want to play in the FIFA Club World Cup, a move to Wydad Casablanca would definitely give him an opportunity to do that.
There were reports earlier that Brazilian sides were also keen to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to their clubs for the tournament, but that noise has since died down.
And if he does make the move, it’ll go down as one of the most intriguing transfers in world football history.
