Manchester United were one of the eight teams selected for the inaugural World Sevens tournament.
They were placed in Group B alongside AS Roma, Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica.
They kicked off their campaign with a five-goal thriller against Italian side Roma on Wednesday.
Celin Bizet and Ella Toone handed the Red Devils a two-goal lead before Roma restored parity, but Grace Clinton secured the victory for the Mancunian giants.
Man United defeated Portuguese champions Benfica 3-1 in their second fixture.
Bizet scored the opener, while Awujo netted a brace to give United a two-goal cushion before Benfica scored a late consolation goal.
United’s last group game was against French runners-up Paris Saint-Germain, with both sides competing for the top spot in the group.
The Red Devils came from behind twice, thanks to goals from Jess Simpson and Maya Le Tissier before winning the game on penalties.
United faced local rivals Manchester City, who finished second in Group A in the semi-final.
They defeated the Cityzens 2-0. Forward Melvine Malard gave Marc Skinner’s side the lead, powering the ball home after receiving a pass from goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
Gabby George sealed the victory, curling into the near post from close range to secure United’s place in the final.
Man United lost 2-1 to German champions Bayern Munich in the final, missing out on winning the $2.5 million cash prize of the competition.
Midfielder Simi Awujo gave United the lead, firing the ball into the roof of the net. Momoko Tanikawa restored parity for Bayern, and Sarah Zadrazil netted the winning goal for the German outfit.
Awujo scored three goals to finish as United’s top scorer and was named the competition’s Breakout Star.
Despite missing out on the trophy, United received $1m for finishing in second place.
