"Ignore what's outside" - Nuno fixated on disregarding pressure and starting well in crunch tie against Chelsea

The denouement of this transformative Nottingham Forest campaign will commence at the City Ground against fellow Champions League hopefuls Chelsea, who have been absent from Europe's most prestigious tournament for two seasons.

Nuno EspĂrito Santo's side have confirmed a spot in one of the European competitions for next season, but it remains to be seen which one.

Nothing less than a win is required to give The Garibaldis their best shot at Champions League football.

After picking up maximum points in only two games since the start of April, their fate will be decided in the hands of others this Sunday.

However, the Nottingham Forest manager highlighted the importance of zoning out from the noise and the possible outcomes of the other fixtures.

"The players are focused on the task on the pitch. We have to focus on what's happening. It's the only way to achieve things. Ignore what's outside and focus on your tasks."

Finishing in the top five is contingent on Aston Villa dropping points at Manchester United and or they have to hang their hat on Newcastle United or Manchester City to fall at the final hurdle.

A potential blow Nuno could also face is leaving out the crucial defensive presence of Murillo.

The Brazilian youngster limped off the pitch at half-time against West Ham before returning to see out the second half, despite concerns of a slight ankle injury.

Nuno admitted they are, "Still assessing. It was his ankle and he hasn't been able to train. Let's see tomorrow."

Detaching from pressure

Forest have drifted away from the secure third place they held throughout the vast majority of the season.

The expectations in the opening game seemed worlds apart from European contention, but the pressure has since ramped up for The Reds to be rewarded for what they have now worked for.

Nuno was insistent on replacing pressure with enjoyment and how this mentality has kept his team grounded from the very start.

"It's on us. It's our responsibility to compete well. In terms of pressure, there's no big difference from the first game of the season. The pressure doesn't help you. That's why we insist that we have to enjoy what we do. The players must be on the pitch enjoying, not thinking about the pressure, not thinking about the perceptions and the ifs. This distracts you."

"We take away that part and play the game. Since the beginning of the season, it's been like that. Focus on the details, focus on the opponents and enjoy the game by competing well."

"Players who play football thinking about other things are not so good."

He added, "One of the parts that we love is that we are enjoying preparing for a big match. So, why not enjoy it? We have to enjoy it."

On opponents Chelsea and motivation

Chelsea travel north to Nottingham with one loss in their last eight league matches before they play in the Conference League Final on Wednesday against Real Betis.

Nuno praised Enzo Maresca's men: "We're going to face a good team. Chelsea is a good team. Good talented players. And like us, it's the decisive game for all of us."

The visitors are aiming for the same objective on Sunday, and Nuno has expressed how he has not needed to galvanise his players, as they know what is at stake.

"In a game like this, in terms of motivation, you just don't have to worry about that because it's already there. The players are on fire to play the game.

"The message is to stick to the tasks. Recognise that it's a tough team to play against and enjoy playing the game like we always do. There's no big message."

Nuno also provided an update on the situation of Taiwo Awoniyi after his serious abdominal injury, and how this will form a part of the mentality his players will adopt.

"He is much better. Already been able to walk. Doctor informed us [Awoniyi] is starting his normal life in terms of eating his food, so he is doing much better."

"In the game, he is not going to be with us, it was a big issue. It is in our mind and we want him to be healthy again. So it is going to be a game for Taiwo, for the fans, for the city, for everybody."

Nottingham Forest have netted the first goal in 25 Premier League games this term, which sits level with champions Liverpool and Arsenal.

It seems all the more important for Forest to assert their authority early on and pile on the pressure for teams to attack them. Subsequently, Nuno can implement his faithful plan of defending and transitional play.

Nuno said, "First of all, we have to start the game really well. It makes a big difference on our game, the way we start. After that, it's play the game. Then it's a matter of answering questions between two teams that are going to fight for the same objective."

On Morgan Gibbs-White's England Call-Up

Gibbs-White earnt his full England call-up from Thomas Tuchel for their upcoming friendlies.

He was initially omitted from Tuchel's first squad announcement, only joining as a result of Cole Palmer sustaining an injury.

This time he will be fully integrated from the start of the England camp, but the conclusion to Forest's significant bid for Champions League football will need to be at the forefront of his mind.

Nuno commended the midfielder, "Well-deserved to get this call. Morgan's been playing good and is part of the plans for the England squad so we are very proud.

"We are only concerned about his performance on Sunday. This is what we think. That's the only thought that is in his mind, to compete and help the team on Sunday."
