A peeved father has been slapped with a £100 parking fine for allegedly leaving his car in a Liverpool city centre shopping area for nearly 10 hours, despite it being parked on his own driveway the entire time. The 27th of April was a day of jubilation for the Reds as Liverpool FC clinched their 20th league title with a home victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

Kyle Murphy was among the throng of supporters at the stadium to witness Arne Slot's squad secure their second Premier League championship in half a decade. Earlier that day, he had made a quick trip from his Rosemary Close residence to Myrtle Parade to pop into the Tesco store.

However, according to the company overseeing the car park, National Parking Control, Mr Murphy didn't retrieve his car until 8pm that day, having entered just past 10.15am. Consequently, a parking charge notice turned up on his doorstep a few days later.

An irate Mr Murphy told the ECHO that he had snapped photos outside his house, next to his car, before heading off to Anfield, which could prove the ticket should be cancelled. He has since lodged an appeal.

He vented: "It's a bit infuriating to be honest. How can they say it was there for 10 hours when there is evidence it was parked somewhere else?" reports the Liverpool ECHO.

"I didn't even know the car park had been taken over. You used to be able to park there no problem.

"I was going to the match that day and I had all the flags out on the car. I'd been to the shop once already that day and didn't even park near it the second time."

A penalty charge notice slapped on Mr Murphy by National Parking Control alleges he parked his vehicle at Myrtle Parade for a whopping nine hours and 44 minutes, landing him with a hefty £100 fine.

However, Mr Murphy has photographic evidence, seen by ECHO, showing his car was actually parked on his driveway half a mile away during the time he's accused of violating parking regulations. The car park charges £1.10 per half hour or a flat rate of £15 for stays between seven and 24 hours.

The letter sent to Mr Murphy, also viewed by the ECHO, states that the penalty was issued due to non-payment for the duration of his stay. Reddit users have voiced their annoyance about the site being managed by a private company, and a petition is underway to ditch the automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) payment system entirely.

Mr Murphy expressed his disbelief, saying: "All of a sudden I've been given a ticket. If it's taken a picture of me going one way, where is the one from the other? Notices have gone up now around the shops now warning people this would happen."

He added: "People could lose their jobs because businesses are losing money when people aren't going to go there."

The Daily Star has contacted the NPC for further comment.
