Unfortunately, it looks like Bayern Munich has missed out on the blockbuster transfer of Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz this summer, who is all but confirmed to be joining Liverpool instead of the German Rekordmeister. For months, it seemed as if Bayern were on the right track to securing the signing of Die Werkself’s playmaker, but Liverpool have come in at the eleventh hour, with discussions with manager Arne Slot reportedly being a key factor why Wirtz chose to go to the Premier League champions instead of Leverkusen’s Bundesliga rivals.
What good is a Plan A without a Plan B, C, D, etc. though? Naturally, there have been other players on Bayern’s shortlist in the event that the Wirtz move fell through, which it looks like it has. They have been monitoring RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons, Chelsea FC’s Christopher Nkunku, Brighton and Hove Albion’s Kaoru Mitoma, and new reports have suggested they are also interested in Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze.
Per information from Bild, Eze is one of the latest names having been mentioned within the walls of Sabener Straße in what could potentially be a reunion with former Palace teammate Michael Olise, who was just recently named the Bundesliga’s rookie of the season. Olise is evidence that the Palace to Bayern transition could work wonders, and Eze has been on an absolute tear for Oliver Glasner’s side, most recently providing the winning goal in their FA Cup triumph over Manchester City at Wembley.
Crystal Palace v Aston Villa - Premier League
Currently, Eze’s contract with Palace runs through June 2027, so next season would see that he enters the last year of his contract, making it a crucial period for the club to decide on his future — whether he stays in London, or goes elsewhere. Per Transfermarkt, the winger is currently valuated at 55 million euros, with his stock having taken a spike as high as 60-million earlier this season.
He finished the season with a tally of 14 goals and 11 assists from 42 appearances across all competitions, of which 7 of the goals have come from the past two months at the tail end of Palace’s Premier League season and run to winning the FA Cup. He is a serious talent that could wind up being a world class player at Bayern should things progress, but there is nothing concrete at this juncture.
The news that Bayern Munich had coughed up the Florian Wirtz transfer was shocking. Even more stunning was that it was Liverpool FC, who ultimately won the Germany international’s heart. So...what next? Let’s rehash how it all went down, why it happened, and then talk about what might on tap next for the Bavarians, who have to start their transfer dealings all over again.
