The 2024-25 season was rough for the Dallas Mavericks, who made the NBA Finals last year.
General manager Nico Harrison traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, Kyrie Irving tore his left ACL in March and Anthony Davis only played in nine games with the Mavericks after the Doncic trade due to an adductor injury.
Dallas missed the playoffs this year, so the team was part of the 2025 draft lottery. The Mavericks won the draft lottery and are expected to draft Duke's Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick.
Since Irving is expected to miss a chunk of next season recovering from his ACL injury, Harrison needs to acquire a point guard this summer.
According to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, Dallas "will be looking to add a capable starter this summer who can later transition into a complementary role once Irving has returned to active duty."

Irving has a player option to return to the Mavericks next season. The nine-time All-Star is expected to decline his player option and sign a new contract with Dallas.
The 33-year-old Irving appeared in 50 games this season. He averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists while shooting 47.3% from the field, 40.1% from beyond the arc and 91.6% from the free-throw line.
It will be fascinating to see who the Mavericks acquire to start at point guard this offseason. Tyus Jones, Tre Jones, D'Angelo Russell, Chris Paul and Malcolm Brogdon are some names Fischer mentioned. The five veterans are free agents.
