The Premier League have confirmed why Emiliano Martinez was sent off during the Premier League clash between Aston Villa and Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Martinez wiped out United striker Rasmus Hojlund in injury time of the crunch battle for Villa, who are gunning for a place in the top five of the Premier League on the campaign's final day and with it a return to the Champions League next season.
"The referee's call of red card to Martinez for denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity (DOGSO) was checked and confirmed by VAR," the Premier League said on social media in the aftermath of Thomas Bramall's decision.
Martinez has made Villa's task of finishing in the top five of the Premier League an almighty task with his red card given United were already looking a far cry from the team that has struggled this season.
The World Cup winner was keeping Villa in the game after a fine string of saves but surged out of his goal to foul Hojlund, who had latched onto a back-pass by Matty Cash with the defender pressed by Mason Mount.
Martinez's future at Villa Park looks uncertain with reports emerging overnight claiming that Arsenal could be interested in a sensational return for the stopper five years on from his Emirates Stadium exit in 2020.
However, Villa boss Unai Emery shut down any talk of his side's clash with United being Martinez's final game in claret and blue in an interview with broadcasters post-match.
"No way," he simply said as his interview with TNT Sports came to a close.
