A banner was seen flying over Anfield as Liverpool played Crystal Palace in the final game of the season. The Reds are set to lift the Premier League trophy this afternoon after they were confirmed champions following a 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur last month.

The trophy will be presented to captain Virgil Van Dijk by Liverpool legend Alan Hansen. Fans have turned the streets surrounding Anfield Stadium into a sea of red as they came adorned with banners, flags and carrying flares.

Fans outside and inside the stadium may have noticed a banner flying overhead shortly before kick off. The banner was carrying a message which read: "Congrats Reds from Bahrain with love."

A mystery Liverpool fan, who is from Bahrain and wants to remain anonymous, was unable to travel over to be at Anfield for the match today. As the fan could not be in the city for the momentous occasion, they decided to arrange for a banner to fly over the stadium.

It will be the first time in 30 years that Liverpool has been able to celebrate winning the league title in a full ground.

Liverpool last won the Premier League in 2020 but covid meant the final home game of the season took place in an empty stadium. After a few near misses since, Liverpool fans from the city and across the globe are arriving in the city to make the most of the celebrations.

The ECHO spoke to Liverpool supporters ahead of the match today about why seeing their team lift the league trophy matters so much. Neil Atkinson from The Anfield Wrap explained how Sunday is the perfect chance to cast off the ghosts from the past.

He told the ECHO: "2020 didn't just exist in the context of 1990 but in all the close calls since. Smicer's volley against Chelsea, winning 4-1 at Old Trafford, the Gerrard slip of 2014 all loom large.

"But the whole of the run from 2018 to 2020, to when the pandemic hit, was a journey that was meant to culminate in a shared moment of sheer joy and absolute vindication for Klopp, his players and all of us.

"And then it went, became rightly impossible but the rightly didn't make it feel better. Watching it was like watching a silent disco that you couldn't be invited to. Sunday is a chance to shake all that off and watching them play and then be formally crowned as Champions will be remarkably special."
